 Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron,  Polish pianist of Bulgarian descent, she graduated with a distinction from Zbigniew S´liwin´ski’s piano class in the State Higher School of Music (now – the Academy of Music) in Gdan´sk (1973). She then took up postgraduate studies with Alexander Jenner in the Hochschule fu¨r Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. She took part in master classes conducted by Suzanne Roche, Dieter Zechlin and Gyo¨rgy Sebo¨k. She was awarded in the 4th National Young Musicians’ Festival in Gdan´sk and the 2nd National Piano Competition in Warsaw. She also reached the semifinals of the 9th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1975, 4th honourable mention), the International Alessandro Casagrande Piano Competition in Terni, Italy (1975) and the ARD Piano Competition in Munich (1978).

 
She gives performances in Poland and abroad, and her repertoire ranges from the baroque to 20th-century music, with special emphasis on the compositions of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy and Barto´k. She has also premiered a number of Polish contemporary works. She is very active as a chamber musician, playing in a piano duo, in duos with violinists, cellists and flutists, in trios and quintets, as well as with such singers as Urszula Kryger, Piotr Kusiewicz and Florian Skulski. One reviewer characterised her playing as follows: “[...] she is an artist of a thoroughly Romantic nature. Her deep commitment and complete confidence in her own interpretations impress the listeners, who are carried away by the reality created by the pianist. She combines technical mastery, musicality of the highest order, and an outstanding individuality of interpretation [...].
 
Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron´ is also a music teacher. At present she is Professor of Piano at the Academies of Music in Gdan´sk and Bydgoszcz. She also teaches talented pupils in secondary schools in Kuyavia and Pomerania. She is invited to hold master classes in Poland and abroad, as well as seminars for piano teachers, open lessons and consultations. She collaborates with Warsaw Cultural Education Centre. She has served on the juries of numerous national and international competitions. Her students win top prizes in piano competitions worldwide, achieve recognition as concert pianists, and some of them – also as successful teachers. Her pupils include Rafal Blechacz, winner of the 15th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2005), the well known jazzman Krzysztof Herdzin and one of the winners of the 2010 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Pawel Wakarecy.
For her volunteer work, the artist was awarded Duke Mestwin II Order of the City Council of Gdan´sk (1999). In 2004 she received the Medal of the Commission of National Education, and in 2005 – the “Gloria Artis” Medal for Merit to Culture and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2011, she was granted the Award of the Marshal of The Kuyavian-Pomeranian V oivodeship.
