Recordings of art songs with obligato clarinet by Franz Schubert, Franz Lachner, Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda and Louis Spohr are brought together on this albumby a very distinguished trio of performers - Helen Donath (soprano), Dieter Klöcker (clarinet) and Klaus Donath (piano). It opens with the best-known piece for this combination, Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock).

Spohr, Lachner and Schubert were not the only composers to have written songs with piano and solo clarinet. Numerous composers of the Romantic era, specially the early period of transition from Classical to Romantic, devoted themselves to this combination. In many cases, the horn made up the trio, but equally popular were flute and violin. The Viennese composers of the post-Waterloo decades were of course Schubert’s colleagues and contemporaries, many of whom had known Beethoven personally or at least come face to face with him and felt compelled by Viennese Classicism to combine classical form with the romantic spirit.
