To Rudolf Kolisch are the ghosts, even and especially in Beethoven (see press reviews). He was perceived by many as a radical analysis of "pace and character of Beethoven’s music" in 1943 an attempt to take seriously Beethoven as a musical revolutionary, and especially the (Kolisch from Sun titled) "religion of the strings", namely the ongoing efforts to the "beautiful tone" to attack.

During his time as artist in residence at the University of Madison, Wisconsin, had the opportunity to implement Kolisch, his musical ideas into practice. His partner at the piano, Gunnar Johansen, a Busoni pupil, was also for many years in Madison. With him were Kolisch many concerts, in addition to works by Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel, Schoenberg, Webern. All these recordings have been preserved on tape and are now in private hands. The University of Madison has numerous other recordings with Kolisch, in his capacity as leader of the Pro Arte Quartet. For more see the discography of the post-war recordings Kolisch.
