The raft of awards and critical acclaim amassed by Phantasm for their three previous Avie releases have appropriately translated into public adulation for this most extraordinary of viol ensembles. The group’s ear-opening approach to music-making creates a richness of sound unmatched by any other viol ensemble playing today. Phantasm’s second offering in its Jenkins series surveys his Five-Part Consorts. Recorded here complete for the first time, they are even more lavish than his six-part pieces (AV 2099), and undoubtedly establish him as one of the most refined and accomplished contrapuntists of the 17th century. The Five-Part Consorts find Jenkins at the height of his compositional powers, fashioning experimental works which are at once sensuous and challenging to both players and listeners. As with all previous Phantasm releases, founder-director Laurence Dreyfus provides the eminently fascinating and informative booklet note, and concludes: “Let me come straight out with it. Jenkins is a marvel.”
