The focus of Kalevi Aho’s output lies on large-scale orchestral works, and his work-list includes fifteen symphonies to date, composed between 1969 and 2010. Although the Finnish composer is famously lavish as an orchestrator, and often invites rare guests such as the heckelphone into his orchestra, the scores of Aho’s three chamber symphonies are much more economic in scale. Although composed for some twenty strings in all, they bear eloquent proof of the composer’s aim of exploiting to the full the expressive capabilities of a string orchestra. Consequently these works are highly demanding for the players, not because virtuosity has been an end in itself, but for reasons of maximum expressivity.

"...Mr Kelly is a formidable virtuoso ... People already interested in Aho’s work will surely want to investigate."

Allen Gimbel - American Record Guide - July/August 2012

Barry Witherden - BBC Music magazine - August 2012

"...The Tapiola Sinfonietta’s performances are splendid , crisp and lithe ... BIS SACS recording is first-rate, the acoustic of the Tapiola Concert Hall affording these works the finest possible enviroment in which to be heard at their best."

Guy Rickards - Gramophone magazine - July 2012

                     IRR Outstanding

"...Recorded sound is absolutely spectacular, capturing every detail of these superb performances. The Tapiola Sinfonietta produces a vigorous, fresh ensemble sound for bothconductors, entirely appropriate to these works, and it sounds as though every member of the orchestra is in fact a world-class soloist. Kelly clearly lives the third Chamber Symphony; his technical capacity is beyond dispute and he has the gift of making his instrument sound like the oriental siren that seems to have influenced the composer. Recommended unreservedly."

Ivan Moody - International Record Review - June 2012
