This a very fresh, sharp and exciting performance, with very good sound for the proms venue in 1971! new remastering had made it clearer and more dynamic, Just a shame that the very last thwack is slightly underpowered after a weighty finale. Despite that, it's one of the best on record, and might surprise you with its impact. The LeningradPO sounds very Russian but plays with discipline and accuracy enough. This disc was recently "highly commended" on Radio3's Building a Library - the reviewer chose the easy way out and picked Karajan as No.1...
