'If you like your Webern to have an almost unearthly fragility, while not ignoring more explicitly dramatic moments, then this new Chandos release will be ideal.'

*****
Between 1905 and 1909, Anton Webern traveled perhaps the greatest distance of any composer in history. This album maps and celebrates that journey with profound sensitivity and understanding. Just go from the first two brilliant pieces of post-Brahmsian string quartet writing to the second of the astonishing Four Pieces for Violin and Piano. Except for the 6th of Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces for Piano and Debussy's "Footprints in the Snow," there had been no depiction of silence like this ever. If you love Webern, or want to love him, this album is a marvelous tutorial.
