The Italian Intermezzo – BBC Philharmonic, Gianandrea Noseda

The intermezzi recorded on this CD are, in the main, orchestral mood-painting interludes found in the great Italian operatic repertoire of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, usually connecting acts in the opera. The music is powerfully atmospheric, designed not only to create the right mood for the ensuing action of the opera, but also to provide some respite from the drama itself. The exception is the famous ballet ‘Dance of the Hours’ from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, which, like most ballets found in operas, gives the audience a break from the drama, providing it with a chance to enjoy an entertaining ballet whilst, in this case, listening to some of the catchiest music in the repertoire. Indeed, this scintillating ballet was immortalised in Walt Disney’s film Fantasia and has long been an orchestral classic.

The other items on this CD range from the very well-known and haunting Prelude to Act III of La traviata to the sparkling movements from Wolf-Ferrari’s I gioielli della Madonna and I quattro rusteghi. Richly romantic intermezzi from the great verismo composers Leoncavallo, Puccini, Giordano, and Cilea are also here, and the rarely heard works by Catalani are no less enjoyable.

The Italian maestro Gianandrea Noseda is in his element in this, his native repertoire. He has made many noted recordings with the BBC Philharmonic for Chandos, praised for their brilliance of sound as well as their musical excellence. His superb musicianship in both the operatic and orchestral repertoire makes this release one of his finest.

              Recording of the Month
"...these are magical, uninhibited heart-on-sleeve performances delivered in the very best Chandos sound."

Ian Lace - Musicweb-international.com - September 2011

“…All are played with great passion and insight and beautiful orchestral tone, under the magisterial leadership of Gianandrea Noseda.”

Parsons – American Record Guide – July/August 2011

“… It’s good to hear these gems as stand-alone works – enjoy them on their own or use them as a stepping stone to discovering the operas they come from.”  ****

Emma Baker

Classic FM Magazine - March 2011

“…Gianandrea Noseda’s selection of intermezzi, preludes and ballet music includes favourites… but there are some welcome rarities in this all-Italian programme…”
“The playing is idiomatic, infectiously con passion and brio.”

Hugh Canning

The Sunday Times - 13 February 2011

“… the sequencing of this CD has been very cleverly and carefully chosen. The performances are suitably vivid and sensitive, always finely controlled and shaped with a masterly hand by Gianandrea Noseda.”

Robert Matthew-Walker

International Record Review - February 2011

“Orchestral excerpts provide a winning programme of opera without words…”  “… Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic make alert guides in this repertoire. …the playing is well detailed and the performances are convincing. Chandos’s recording is typically rich …”

Richard Fairman

Gramophone - March 2011

“Gianandrea Noseda is on home ground with a new disc of 16 Italian intermezzi.” “…The BBC Philharmonic is on fine form.”

Peter Spaull

Liverpool Daily Post - 8 January 2011

"...Gianandrea Noseda conducts these titbits as a labour of love and is fully appreciative of these composers’ shared methods and – more importantly – their distinctions. Anyone new to Romantic Italian Opera will enjoy a sampler par excellence and those who adore the full works will relish this tasty nibbling of their wonderful qualities."
