Mascagni in Concert – Luciano Ganci, Filarmonica ’900 Teatro Regio Torino, Gianandrea Noseda

The Italian composer Pietro Mascagni was best known for his operatic output. However, that is not to say that he did not explore other genres. On this disc, which is part of our ongoing series of Italian music, a selection of his works for the concert hall receives idiomatic performances by Gianandrea Noseda and the Filarmonica ’900 Teatro Regio Torino, with the tenor Luciano Ganci as soloist in three pieces. The music is rich in melodic and harmonic invention and the ear-tickling orchestration is beautifully coloured.

“… The Filharmonica ‘900 Teatro Reggio Torino was founded in 2003, at the initiative of the musicians of Turin’s distinguished opera orchestra. It is a first-rate ensemble, and Noseda conducts fluent , dynamic performances. Chandos’s sound is warm and detailed, and I can recommend this appealing CD.”

Paul Orgel – Fanfare – March/April 2014

George Hall - BBC Music magazine - Christmas 2013

                       **** - Excellent

Alberto Cantù - Musica magazine (Italy) - November 2013

                      *** - (Good Disc)

Michel Fleury - Classica magazine - November 2013

"...Some agreeably spick-and-span playing from the Turin orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda’s sympathetic baton and Chandos’s unobtrusively natural sound grace an anthology that Mascagni diehards will want to hear."

Andrew Achenbach - Gramophone magazine - October 2013

“…This was an agreeable programme – enjoyable , and well presented.”

Peter Spaull – Liverpool Post – 9 October 2013

"A fascinating programme of concert works by a composer famed for his work for the stage... Noseda has championed Mascagni before, and his passion for (and pride in) this repertoire shines through every bar. Anyone who loves Italian music of the late 19th and 20th centuries should sample without delay."

Guy Weatherall - Classical Music magazine - October 2013

"... The Filarmonica ’900 orchestra plays it [Visione lirica] with ravishing beauty. For an insight into Mascagni away from the operatic stage, this is a diverting album, enticingly played."

Mark Pullinger - International Record Review - October 2013
