“... The BBC Philharmonic plays with verve, brilliant colors, and splendid commitment for conductor Mena, who seems to know how to dig deeply enough into the music to express it with conviction but not push it beyond its limits. This is not the most profound music, but it is marvellously crafted, superbly orchestrated, and brilliantly executed here...”

“…Recorded in such vivid, naturalistic sound, Canto a Seville provides the perfect introduction to the mature compositions of Turina.”

“… These thoroughly sympathetic performances are well played, energetic, and colourful; they benefit from Chandos’s lush recorded sound.” James H North

"... María Espada adds a luminous glow to this homage to Seville in all its mystery and magic, exuberance and eerie phantasms."
Geoffrey Norris - Gramophone magazine - August 2014
"...For Chandos, the piece [Espada] hugely benefits not only having a Spanish conductor wholly in tune with Turina’s language (which is by no means all splashy Picasso-esque colour) but an orchestra brimming with top-class instrumentalists, fully on top of the many solos they are allocated, not just in the Canto but throughout the disc. I would hazard a guess on present evidence that the oboe was Turina’s favourite orchestral instrument: the oboe solos here are meltingly beautiful everywhere... Excellent recorded sound from Manchester and an informatve booklet note from Gerald Larner also contribute to the hope that Chandos wll continue to mine what is proving to be a very fruitful musical vein."
