Often described as an ‘Impressionist’ composer, French composer Claude Debussy was one of the most original voices of the early 20th Century, with a distinctly French musical outlook in his compositions. He was an innovator of the first degree who revolutionised composition for the pianoforte and orchestra with instrumental colour and atmospheric sound world, and effects which are understated and contain much to enchant the ear.
Debussy’s most famous music on one CD making it an ideal introduction to this composer.
Yan Pascal Tortelier is famous for his recordings of the French repertoire, of which this undoubtedly represents some of the most popular.
…the best Debussy cycle to appear in the CD era… Playing combines flair, care and musical enjoyment’.
BBC Music Magazine
‘What a glorious instrument the Ulster Orchestra is in Tortelier’s hands – eloquent principals in every section and supple consummate ensemble in this most subtle and flexible of repertoire…’
