Australian-born composer and pianist Percy Grainger, was an eccentric figure and lifelong experimenter who is best known for a selection of exquisite folk-song arrangements including Country Gardens and Molly on the Shore. Part of the English folksong movement: Grainger collected over 500 folksongs and traditional tunes which he drew on when composing his original and impressive folksong arrangements.
Grainger’s music is universally popular, with the well-loved Country Gardens and many others being instantly recognisable.
This CD includes the cream of Grainger’s vast output and the carefully planned compilation is both an ideal introduction to this extraordinary composer’s music and a must-have CD for Grainger’s many existing admirers.
The performances are all highly regarded and all in state-of-the-art sound.
Chandos’ Grainger Edition is clearly going to be revelatory and confirms Grainger as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Excellent recording: all in all a marvellously stylish, eminently recommendable disc.

Hickox is very, very good in this repertoire. Each tug at the heart-strings is brought off with taste and style.
