From Purcell’s ‘King Arthur’ ‘Fairest Isle’ is a patriotic song for Venus, set as a courtly minuet. In the same composer’s ‘Indian Queen’, an improbable tale of conflict between the Mexicans and Indians, ‘I attempt from Love’s sickness’ is sung by an Aerial Sprit. ‘Rinaldo’ was Handel’s first opera for the new King’s Theatre, Haymarket. In ‘Hear thou my weeping’ the captive Almirena begs for her freedom in simple but moving accents. In Handel’s oratorio ‘Joshua’ ‘Oh! Had I Jubal’s lyre’ is a joyful song for Achsah.

The production of Mozart’s first opera, ‘Idomeneo’ in 1781 was only 22 years after Handel’s death. In ‘Gentle zephyrs’ Ilia at last admits to herself that she is in love with Idamantes. ‘Thanks be to you’ is a concert aria Mozart wrote for his sister-in-law, the soprano Aloysia Lange to take temporary leave of her faithful public.

In ‘Dark day of dread’ from Rossini’s ‘Semiramis’, Semiramis and Arsace, her son whom she once tried to kill, sing of their mixed emotions. In the aria @Dark sombre wood’ from Rossini’s ‘William Tell’, Mathilde sings of the peace she has found in her love for the soldier Arnold. In their Act I duet from Donizetti’s ‘Linda di Chamounix’, Linda and her would-be fiancé, Carlo, look forward to their wedding day. From Bizet’s ‘The Pearl Fishers’ the aria ‘I’m all alone here in the night’, Leïla is waiting for Nadir; and when Nadir arrives the lovers greet each other ecstatically.

Probably the most famous of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas is ‘The Mikado’.’ In ‘The sun whose rays’, Yum-Yum admires her reflection in the glass as she prepares for her marriage to Nanki-Poo. The arrangement of ‘When you’re sent roses’ from Zeller’s ‘The Bird Seller’ is a typical example of the opera’s charm. Wally from Catalani’s ‘La Wally’ is ordered to marry her father’s choice, but refuses. Her father threatens to throw her out, and her dignified reply is ‘I float into the distance’.

From Boughton’s ‘The Immortal Hour’ ‘How beautiful they are’ is a simple pentatonic melody, sung as the fairy princess is taken back to the land of the heart’s desire. ‘Oh, my beloved father’ from Pucinni’s ‘Gianni Schicchi’, already famous from a recording by Joan Hammond, became even more famous as the main titles music from ‘A Room with a View’ sung by Kiri Te Kanawa. ‘Kiss me, Kate’ was one of Cole Porter’s last musicals, and ‘So in love’ is one of the best-loved numbers in the show.

‘Gently little boat’ from Stravinsky’s ‘The Rake’s Progress’ has a bitter-sweet tone. Anne Truelove must take leave of Tom Rakewell who has been condemned to Bedlam.
