This first volume of Chandos’ complete survey is thus very welcome… sonorous performances by the Russian State Symphonic cappella… and Valeri Polyansky’s conducting brings out all the detail.

Performers here are full of dash and colour, athletically shaped… Polyansky conducts with deft but incisive lightness of touch that bodes well for subsequent volumes in the series.
