Enrique Granados wrote some of the most colourfully attractive piano music in the repertoire, awash with the rhythms and atmosphere of Spain, and unfailingly entertaining. Thomas Rajna has a flair for the repertoire, this download including some lesser-known but inspired pieces. The Escenas Romanticas, for example, features some of the composer’s finest music. The digitally remastered recording, from 1976, sounds superb and is well worth exploring. As the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs says, Rajna’s recordings form a ‘distinguished set’.
