Andriessen started rather late as a composer of orchestral music. His Symphony No. 1 was completed in 1930 and premiered on October 1st of the same year by the Haarlemsche Orkest-Vereenigung led by van Beinum. 2 years later Andriessen himself performed the symphony with the same orchestra. The movements are closely interrelated thematically, and finish with a powerful finale.
"... This may be considered a nice find for listeners seeking a fresh conservative voice from that turbulent period. The composer’s compatriots play the music with skill and enthusiasm."
Allen Gimbel - American Record Guide - May/June 2013
"...Strongly recommended."
Barry Brenesal - Fanfare - May/June 2013
"...If you like to explore the music of composers on the outer periphery of the catalogue, as I do, then don’t miss out on this outstanding issue of a long ignored master."
