Arnold Mendelssohn was the second cousin of Felix Mendelssohn and was best known as a composer of lieder. Among his compositions are many choral pieces, folk songs, string quartets, sonatas, and operas. His sacred choral works launched the renewal of Lutheran church music. The German music encyclopedia MGG calls him “one of the most prominent figures of his day, a musician and man of great breadth of vision.” Later in life he wrote several of his most mature works, mostly in a chamber format. Among them are the strings quartets on our CD, both written in 1916 in an expressive late-romantic style.

"... Mendelssohn’s quartets are definately worth hearing, and in performances as fine as these, the disc can definately be recommended to chamber music mavens curious to explore the outer fringes of the early 20th-century repertoire."

Jerry Dubins - Fanfare - July/August 2013

"... The performances and recorded sound are fine."

Don O’Connor - American Record Guide - May/June 2013

Burkhard Schäfer - Ensemble magazine - April/May 2013

“This well-made music is essentially late Romantic in style, with just occasional passages in which the harmonies loosen their grip on tonality, such as Reger or early Schoenberg...these performances by the Reinhold Quartet show that both works are worth hearing.”  ***
