Vadym Kholodenko Plays Medtner and Rachmaninoff

In her foreword for the booklet of this Delos release, the company’s director, Carol Rosenberger, wrote: ‘The legendary Russian pianism of yesteryear is alive and well! When I listen to Vadym play the piano, I feel that I am witnessing a musical reincarnation.’ The qualities to which she alludes are the same ones that inspired the judges, audiences, and media critics attending the 2013 Van Cliburn Competition to respond to Kholodenko’s artistry with awe-stricken rapture.

‘Russian pianism’ is best demonstrated via the interpretation of music by Russian composers – and here Vadym Kholodenko’s choice of relatively uncommon repertoire by two of Russian music’s ‘golden-age’ composer-pianists is especially revealing: nine of Serge Rachmaninoff’s thirteen intriguing piano transcriptions, plus the brilliant but unjustly neglected ‘Night Wind’ Sonata, in E minor (his seventh), by Nikolai Medtner, considered his supreme masterpiece.

Sylvain Fort - Classica magazine (France) - June 2014

"...This fine survey of Russian arias- recoded last May in Kaunas, Lithuania, under Constantine Orbelian’s sure baton - may change the way we think about this valuable artist... A highlight of this disc is the seductive, beautifully orchestrated aria "In the celestial ocean," from the Lermontov-based Demon, by Anton Rubinstein (1829-94) ... The part seems a natural fit for Abdrazakov. Sheer decibel-power may not be Abdrazakov’s strongest suit, but any opera house staging the Russian works reperesented here would certainly want to count him among its players."

David Shengold - Opera News magazine - May 2014
