Original Soundtrack from a Ballet by Youri Vamos
The history of the slave revolt under Spartacus, one of the most violent uprisings of antiquity, has come down to us through various sources, the most copious of which are those of the Roman historians Sallust, Plutarch and Appanius.
This days the name of Spartacus stands for struggle for freedom by the oppressed: for this reason it is hardly surprising that this ancient story has aroused renewed interest, particularly in socialist countries. In 1950 Khachaturian visited Italy as part of a Russian delegation. He must have come into detailled contact with the story there, because he began composing the score as early as 1952.
