Music Inspired by Shakespeare and Hamlet – South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Ziva

The plays and characters of Shakespeare have inspired countless composers. On this disc Friedrich Kuhlau paints a musical portrait of the dramatist himself, and Hamlet, perhaps his most famous character, is vividly brought to life in music by Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Joachim, and Edward MacDowell who adds a separate portrait of Hamlet’s tragic beloved, Ophelia. This is an imaginative and original tribute to the Bard.

"...this unusual selection has been well put together. It’s worth a listen."

Jonathan Woolf - musicweb-international.com - July 2012

"...this new recording offers more than competitive performances of the well-known Liszt and Tchaikovsky works and excellent performance in the lesser-known Kuhlau, Joachim, and MacDowell numbers. The program is a fascinating one - it always is to hearhow several different composers approach the same subject - and all-round superb orchestral playing from the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and Danacord’s equally superb sound make this a highly desirable and recommendble release.

Jerry Dubins - Fanfare  - March/April 2012
