Sammartini: Orchestral works – Orchestra da Camera Milano Classica, Gini Roberto

‘Sammartini composed at a time when the sinfonia was in a state of flux in Italy. He wrote some 20 three-movement works, calling them by different names, although the Sinfonia in G, JC 39, had an additional Minuet with variations. They are scored for strings except for the Overtura a 6 in F, JC 33, which includes a couple of braying horns in the outer movements. The allegros are in baroque style, slow movements are gently elegant or nostalgic (as in the Sinfonia in D, JC 15), occasionally quite touching, as is the Largo of the Sonata in A, JC 65. They are essentially slight but certainly enjoyable when played as stylishly and affectionately as they are here. The recording is excellent too, in a pleasing acoustic…’
