 Enrico Calcagni Soloist

The very idea of writing works for solo oboe is quite a challenge.
The ample 18th-century literature for solo oboe invariably calls for basso continuo, and that of the 19th century, quantitatively less conspicuous, the piano. From the second half of the 20th century, however, things have drastically changed, and the instrument often appears without its traditional partners, presenting itself with a new personality and in a new role. From a stylistic point of view, the literature for solo oboe of the 20th and 21st centuries is quite diversified, spanning from tonal neoclassicism to the most provoking radicalism. It is often the output of oboists-composers, knowledgeable connoisseurs of the technical means of this instrument. Noteworthy among them is the Swiss Heinz Holliger, whose Sonata opens our album. Siegfried Thiele is a German composer of rigorous academic training. His two Inventionen for oboe solo are short pieces that follow one another without pause, the second of which is particularly brilliant in character. Friedrich Schenker, a vanguard trumpet player and composer who, in 1968, wrote the Monologue for oboe here featured in world première recording. Luca Belcastro wrote La pobre Virgen blanca in 2001. The title refers to a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca, where the ”pobre Virgen blanca” represents hope. The piece, like the poem, goes after the dream of reversing time, the desire to invert its flow, making it - in the words of the author himself - ”a never-ending spring rather than a stream flowing into the sea”. Hans Erich Apostel was one of the most talented pupils of Alban Berg; his Sonatina for oboe solo Op. 39a, written in 1965, is structured in nine very short movements following one another in a sound continuum where the influence of the Second School of Vienna is quite evident. Quite different is the Sonatina for oboe solo by Ernst Krenek. It was composed in 1954 and consists of six movements, also quite concise but a lot more narrative in character, using plainer language of clear tonal descent. Fragment by Friedrich Goldmann is another very short piece, a sort of fascinating meditation where moments of serene lyricism are interrupted by brusque jolts, like in an abstract inner dialogue. Sound of Ledra for English horn by Virginio Zoccatelli was written in 2007 and draws inspiration from the evocative force of nature. The involuntary protagonist is a stream, the Ledra, inspiring, with its unstoppable flowing, irregular course and feelings that are rendered in a language of late 20th-century European flavour. An oboist and a composer, the French Gilles Silvestrini is featured in the present album with two pieces: Paysage avec Pyrame et Thisbé for English horn (1995) and Boulevard des Capucines, from the Six Studies for oboe solo (1997). The tranquil and elegant Paysage avec Pyrame et Thisbé recalls the homonymous masterpiece by the master of French Classicism Nicolas Poussin, while Boulevard des Capucines renders in music the animation of the famous 1873 painting by Claude Monet.
