EM Records’ third album features Joseph Holbrooke’s Second Violin Sonata (restored to its original version) and the Viola Sonata by Granville Bantock – played on Gustav Holst’s viola. Luxuriously romantic, these works also display striking individuality, juxtaposing warm lyricism, wry humour and exuberant energy. They are performed by regular EMF artists Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard, whose recording of Violin Sonatas by Bliss, Walford Davies and York Bowen formed EM Records’ first release and which has been greeted with glowing critical acclaim.
RECORDING OF THE MONTH "...There is nothing tentative about these performances which are highly skilled and completely dedicated and immersed... EM Records have started out magnificently with this disc. We must hope to hear much more of Luck and Rickard. Let them continue to explore and harry the periphery rather than being drawn to the well-served ‘great and good’." Rob Barnett - MusicWeb-International.com - March 2011
"Marshall-Luck plays Gustav Holst’s viola in the Bantock and proves a good ambassador for both works, violin and viola, and has clearly spent much time preparing for the undertaking...It’s fine news that these two pretty much ignored works have been given some careful attention"
