The programme is largely devoted to striking works of a youthful Britten and allows us, by the same token, to discover the exceptional talent of a string orchestra unlike any others. The European Camerata was born in 1995, in order to follow up on the experience of the Youth Orchestra of the European Community, from which all members originate. It is conducted by violinist Laurent Quénelle; the orchestra plays standing, and each musician’s virtuosity melts in an impressive ensemble. With the sole exception of a noteworthy recording of the clarinet concerto by Nicolas Bacri, the ensemble, which is based both in France and in England has not been recorded. Fuga Libera is delighted to welcome the European Camerata into its catalogue with four splendid works of the great British composer. The Lachrimae in the orchestral version first heard in 1976 are performed here on the arpegina, a large dissymmetrical alto, created by luthist Bernard Sabatier for Jean-Paul Minali-Bella. This instrument with its warm sonority is a genuine success of modern instrument building.
