Schubert: Piano Sonata in B flat major, D 960; Drei Klavierstücke, D 946 – Paul Badura-Skoda

Even at a very advanced age, the great pianist Paul Badura-Skoda is always good for a surprise: this new download from Genuin is one of his most unusual recordings and one of the most daring tonal experiments heard in recent years. Schubert’s wonderful final sonata, the B flat major, has been recorded by Badura-Skoda, but not just once: it is heard on three different instruments in interpretations which could not be more distinctive from one another: on an 1826 Graf fortepiano (from when the work was composed), a 1923 Bösendorfer, and a 2004 Steinway grand. It is a fascinating music experience which will be cherished by all lovers of the piano in general, and of Schubert, in particular.

             International Piano magazine Choice

"...A most fascinating release that is urgently recommended."

Colin Clarke - International Piano magazine - May/June 2014

"... Badura-Skoda’s admirers will not be disappointed, and anyone who loves this repertoire owes it to himself or herself to become aquainted with one or more of these readings, which have a valedictory strength that never becomes overheated or self-conscious."

Raymond Tuttle - Fanfare - July/August 2013

"... At age 87 the pianist can rightfully claim to be one of the grand old men of the keyboard. Regardless of what instrument he plays, these performances have a secure claim for our attention and admiration. If you can, be certain to allow for this in your collection. Schubert at his best and best and Badura-Skoda at his best is a hard combination to ignore."

Alan Becker - American Record Guide - May/June 2013
