Sibelius: Symphonies Nos 1 and 5; Pohjola’s Daughter – BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Malcolm Sargent
Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Adrian Boult, and Sir Malcolm Sargent were the four leading British conductors in the decades following World War II, and Sir Malcolm is remembered internationally for the wide range of his repertoire. In this regard, his performances of the music of Jean Sibelius were always exceptionally well received, and we are very pleased to present this new transfer of several of his most memorable Sibelius recordings from the 1950s with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, of which for many years he was chief conductor. The beautifully recessed EMI recordings have been lovingly restored, with the result that later generations can well appreciate the undoubted qualities of this greatly admired conductor. The download offers exceptional musical quality and value for money.
"... there are no finer performances of these works, and the sound is very good (1956 and 1958)."
