A light orchestra is capable of producing a rich and glorious sound, and a clever composer or arranger will try to bring out the strengths of the various ensembles within the total framework. Sometimes the strings predominate, whereas there are other times when individual soloists will demonstrate their abilities. This collection focuses on some enjoyable melodies where the overall tone of the piece is greatly enhanced by a particular instrument - occasionally with more than one playing in unison. The piano and brass are often called upon in this capacity, but less familiar soloists (such as the xylophone, musette, harmonica, tuba - and even the theatre organ) also take centre stage.
