The Pianist in the Spotlight
In this collection it is the turn of pianists to take centre stage. Some of them will be familiar as famous solo artists, while others fronted their own groups or small ensembles which bear their name. Occasionally there are the unsung heroes whose work in orchestras often goes unnoticed, although they would surely be missed if they suddenly disappeared. Among the remarkable pianists spotlighted are George Shearing, Semprini, Winifred Atwell, and Roger Williams, together with some remembered from earlier times, including Billy Mayerl, Carroll Gibbons, and Raie Da Costa who died tragically young at the peak of her popularity. Most, such as David Rose, Robert Farnon, and George Melachrino, are playing with top light orchestras.
