‘Melody Mixture’
Unlike many of the albums in this ‘Golden Age of Light Music’ series, this collection does not have a special theme or concept. It is simply a varied mixture of melodies featuring works by composers who are well-known to light music aficionados, plus a good helping of pieces by ‘giants’ of the music world, such as Henry Mancini (his laid-back theme for the TV series ‘Mr Lucky’), Duke Ellington (his evocative standard ‘Caravan’ gets a special treatment by the Wal-Berg Orchestra) and Ron Goodwin (with one of his own compositions “Pleasure Island”). Most of these numbers have been considered for recent collections, but had been temporarily ‘shelved’ for various reasons – usually because the CDs were already full. But they don’t deserve to be forgotten, because they all possess their own special charms. Therefore the ‘Mixture’ offers the big names mentioned above, together with several (the likes of Dolf van der Linden, Trevor Duncan, Cyril Watters, Angela Morley and Bernie Wayne) who have become Guild favourites as a result of their less familiar works finally receiving the attention they fully deserve.
