Kirsten Johnson has recorded the complete piano music of ‘Boston Six’ composer Amy Beach (1867-1944). This last disc in the series includes all of her final opuses for piano. Old Chapel by Moonlight, From Six to Twelve, A Bit of Cairo, and A September Forest (in manuscript) are all world premiere recordings. Nocturne, which opens the album, is classic Beach, full of rich chords and sonorities with long melodic lines. A Cradle Song of the Lonely Mother is hypnotic and soulfully beautiful. Johnson’s technical ability and natural flair for these pieces conveys the chipmunks and hummingbirds of Three Pianoforte Pieces, op. 128, with great élan. Amy Beach: Piano Music, Volume Four, The Late Works is a wonderful culmination of this recording project, a marriage of the pianistic talents of Kirsten Johnson with the compositional greatness of her compatriot Amy Beach.

"... If you like the short pieces by macDowell and his contemporary New Englanders, you will most likely respond well to the music of Amy Beach. There is charm aplenty, grace, and all the vivacious technical savvy one could ask for..."

Alan Becker - American Record Guide - May/June 2013

"...Some of the most pellucid writing can be found in the Five Improvisations. Surely this is a distillation of all that’s gone before. Easeful and inventive, this is music and music-making of joy and contentment. Indeed, as artistic summations go this could hardly be more impressive.Music of striking character and charm, superbly played; a fitting conclusion to this fine cycle."

Dan Morgan - MusicWeb-International.com - 14 November 2012

"... Kirsten Johnson’s playing is ... a model of professionalism and tastefulness ... she has an intimate understanding of Beach, and of the milieu in which the composer lived and worked ..."

Raymond S Tuttle - International Record Review - November 2012
