The exciting and vigorous talents of Sebastian of Hérin and The New Characters announce their debut on Glossa with a major - and appropriately ’unexpected’ - release of a glaring omission on record operatic Rameau: The Surprises of Love (Cupid’s Surprises). This opera-ballet, here Consisting of three separate entries, first Performed in 1748 and later revisions to Submitted, comes from the period of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s rich maturity when he had become a deal finally at the court.

Three tales of love variously struggling against aggression (The Abduction Adonis), indifference (The Enchanted Lyre) and drink (Anacreon) are brought to life in this captivating new generation mixing vocal tunes, dialogues and duets with the full panoply of Rameau’s orchestral genius - Including sleep and battle scenes, dances and thunder effects.

Formed recently though, the Lyon-based The New Character counts with a permanent group of artists, all of which, as well as the cultured harpsichord-playing and management of Sébastien d’Hérin, presents here vocal soloists of the quality of Karine Deshayes, Caroline Mutel Anders Dahlin, Virginie Pochon and Jean-Sébastien Bou, Who are Called upon to portray an array of mythological figures: such as Cupid himself, His mother Venus, Diana the huntress, the Siren Parthenope, the Muse Urania as well as the bibulous lover Anacreon , all in an inventive musical score All which featured no less than Originally Madame de Pompadour in it’s cast.

"...None of the performances are execrable, and a few are exceptional. Amel Brahim-Djelloul stands out in the first section not only for tonal beauty and phrasing, but for an extremely forward enunciation that surpasses that of her colleagues. Anders Dhalin is a sweet rather than powerful haute-contre, and while doing justice to all three roles, is at his best as the love-struck Linus. Finally, karine Deshayes makes the most of all the dramatic possibilities she recieves in three parts, as Diane, Uraine, and the Grand Priestess of Bacchus. Sébastien d’Hérin leads Les Nouveaux Caractères in exciting but disciplined performances. The orchestra never swamps the singers, and the result is one of the best recordings of a Rameau stage work in several years."
