François-Xavier Roth began his series of the tone poems of Richard Strauss in the spring of 2013 on a serious note with "Ein Heldenleben" and "Tod und Verklärung". Now, the second appears. It shows once again that these works benefit from Roth’s powerful interpretation. And also the orchestral color of these scores shows the sensitivity of the orchestra from Baden-Baden and Freiburg in the best possible light. It has been a long time since a systematic recording of Strauss’ tone poems have been offered on the CD market, and with the musical and artistic level evident in these recordings, it suggests itself to speak of a generation of reference recordings
"... The playing of the soloists is excellent. I particularly liked Guthmann’s clear, yet expressive portrayal of the title role. This one gos to the top of recent recordings."
