The symphonies of Anton Bruckner are musical Himalayas; their extreme length, and difficulty put every conductor and orchestra who attempts playing them to the test. For this edition of Premium Composers, two of Bruckner’s mightiest scores have been selected. The Seventh Symphony is the composer’s most popular and frequently programmed symphony. From the reverential hush of its opening bars, its glorious conclusion, with its pair of Wagner Tubas soaring to their highest notes, the Seventh Symphony is Bruckner at his finest! Conductor Kurt Sanderling delivers one of the best recordings of this work in the catalogue: "This thrilling live recording of the Seventh only confirms his credentials as a first-rate Brucknerian." - ClassicsToday.com

At the other end of the spectrum, is Bruckner’s unfinished Ninth Symphony. Conceived in part on the model of Beethoven’s Ninth, Bruckner’s work inhabits another world completely. Darkly scored, with pounding rhythms and jarring dissonances, Bruckner anticipates the later developments of Mahler, Strauss and beyond. Featured on this recording is conductor Carlo Maria Giulini - one of the Ninth’s unquestioned masters.
hänssler CLASSIC’s new series - Premium Composers is more than just another "Best Of…" or "Greatest Hits" collection. Each two-disc set will feature critically acclaimed performances of complete works, performed by the greatest singers, musicians and ensembles in Europe. These recordings are an ideal way to fill-in gaps in your collection, or experience for the first time, spectacular recordings you may have missed!

"...This is Bruckner playing of the highest order, wholly in the spirit of the composer."

Ralph Moore - musicweb-international.com - 10 April 2012
