Beethoven’s only oratorio is heard here in a passionate and reverential interpretation by Helmuth Rilling and his elite choir, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart. They are joined by a cast of first-rate soloists - Maria Venuti, Keith Lewis, Michel Brodard - and the passionate accompaniment of the Stuttgart Bach-Collegium Stuttgart makes Beethoven’s setting of the dramatic biblical scene in the Garden of Gethsemane a profound experience.
