 Stanislaw Skrowaczewski

Available together for the first time, these recordings were previously released in 1990 and 1991 respectively on Pickwick, and were both hailed by the critics.

Of Symphony No.5: ’...This is a performance, in short in which every detail has been carefully thought out in the context of an evolving structure ... If I had to live with a single account of this great symphony, I should be very content if it were this one.’ Gramophone

of Symphony No.10: ’This [is nothing] less than a first-rate overall achievement.’ Gramophone

These fantastic recordings conincide with a major six week festival in Manchester which celebrates the life and work of Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich and his Heroes features the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic who will present twelve concerts that combine the complete Shostakovich symphonic cycle with works by some of the composer’s most notable musical influences.

Also on the Hallé label is Shostakovich’s Symphonies No.1 and No.6, also conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski.
Skrowaczewski combined something of the orchestra’s sophistication with the unequivocal directness which emerges from his own uncompromising honesty in interpretation.’ The Times
