Highly acclaimed for concert performances of these works, prior to making this recording. This recording includes the essential orchestral works from Wagner operas.

Soprano Anja Kampe, who specialises in Wagner roles, has come to international prominence in recent years with leading roles planned in all the major opera houses for the coming years. An artist with a proven pedigree and an immense career ahead.

Sir Mark Elder, recognised as one of the leading opera house conductors, brings great experience of the theatre to the Hallé’s concerts and recordings.

"It is clear that [the Hallé is] capable of delivering one of the finest concert performances we are likely to hear in this country.’

Independent on Sunday - February 2007  (reviewing a Hallé concert of orchestral works from Wagner operas, as performed on this album.)

*****
If Wagner were a band, this would be the "best of" record. I'd recommend it to anybody that, like me, wants to get aquainted to this composer's music and doesn't know where to start. Even if you discover that it's not to your taste, you'll probably find a piece or two that you'll want to come back to.
