John Douglas Todd interviews Sir Adrian Boult (extract from 85th birthday broadcast)

3:32
 Adrian Boult Soloist

One of the great British conductors of the 20th century, Sir Adrian Boult studied under the legendary Arthur Nikisch in Berlin, which makes his Brahms’s interpretations so special. This fiery 1976 stereo broadcast of Brahms Symphony No.1 is the only authorised live account available.  The broadcast of Elgar’s Enigma Variations from the Royal Albert Hall in 1971 features the alternative organ part played by George Thalben-Ball, one of the most celebrated organists of his time. The album also includes interview material with Boult on the occasion of his 85th birthday.

“...his touch is sure and masterly... deep enjoyment.”

The Sunday Times - May 2011

“...the 87 year old Boult commanding a fiery, incisive, lyrically-affecting and passionate response from the BC Symphony Orchestra.”

ClassicalSource.com - May 2011

"Many recordings have been releases since these first appeared, and yet one would be hard-pushed to name any that can truly top them. They’re proof, if any were needed, that sometimes the oldies are the best.”

Classic FM Magazine - July 2011

“The performance combines the impetuoisity and drive of youth with the wisdom and experience of age. The orchestra is at the top of its very considerable form, its members play as if possessed, and one get’s the feeling that the music is being composed before one’s very ears.”

Elgar Society Journal - August 2011

“Sir Adrian’s account of Elgar’s Enigma Variations is the benchmark by which all others are measured. The speeds are organic, the mood arcadian.”

La Scena Musicale - May 2011

“Brahms’s First is … straight-backed, admirably clear, rhythmically supple and with its big first-movement exposition repeat intact. A good recording, too, just as it is for a 1971 BBC SO Elgar Enigma Variations, where cleanly separated violin desks help balance the sound-picture.”

Gramophone magazine  - September 2011

“This is a very powerful reading, from the quite fast introduction of the first movement to the triumphal close. It’s very well played by the BBC Symphony Orchestra – there’s real vibrancy in the orchestral textures here. Much the same can be said of the Elgar ‘Enigma’ Variations from the Royal Albert Hall Centenary Concert in 1971, again with the BBC SO. Boult keeps ‘Nimrod’ flowing, but in the finale his speeds are more flexible – starting steadily, then pushing on. It all works extremely well.”
