Shura Cherkassy (1909-1995) was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time. This WDR studio broadcast sourced from the original master tapes includes a performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini from 1970 in superb stereo. He recorded the work only once in 1953 which was never issued on CD so this recording, along with Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No.7 (also never recorded commercially) represent two major new works in Cherkassky’s large discography.

“Cherkassky was a pianist from Odessa whose infant brilliance did not immediately translate into adult mastery, but in his prime he was extraordinary, as these tracks show. Quick-silver quirkiness, intense musicality; nobody plays like this now.”

The Independent - June 2011

“The pianist’s irrepressible spirit shines through in Prokofiev’s Seventh Sonata and the Stravinsky pieces.”

Daily Telegraph - May 2011

“Each piece receives an enormously characterful performance to crown a release of exceptional pianism.”

ClassicalSource.com - July 2011

“...this Cologne radio retrieval  is a total stunner. Listen to Cherkassky (1909 - 1995) in the opening of Rachmaninov’s Paganini Variations and you’ll think he’s written it himself. Tempo, expression, humour, sobriety - all bear the hallmarks of an original interpreter.”

La Scena Musicale - May 2011

“...The teasing rubato of the Rachmaninov Polka is the stuff of Legends.”

MusicWeb-International.com - September 2011
