 Steinberg, William

William Steinberg’s recording of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis has never been issued before on CD and is in excellent stereo sound. Along with the superb Cologne Radio Choir, Steinberg used a superb quartet of soloists for this demanding work – Heather Harper (who sang on EMI’s Giulini recording), Julia Hamari, Sven Olof Eliasson and Peter Meven. Both Hamari and Meven were regular performers at all the European festivals, notably under Karajan. Steinberg’s interpretation is one of fiery intensity, majesty and utter fidelity to the score, which was one of his main characteristics as a conductor.

“Throughout, the Cologne Radio Chorus copes impressively with the huge demands of the choral writing. This performance is straightforward in the best sense, and it makes a powerful and lasting impact, in clear, full stereo.”

International Record Review - May 2012

“There is a feeling of expansiveness and grandeur as the magnificent sound of the recording and the superb singing of soloists and choir open out to the vastness of the starry canopy...I keep coming back, though, to the recorded sound which has the most amazing clarity and transparency, not to mention dynamic range...This is a grand, noble, and exalted Missa Solemnis that, in my opinion [Jerry Dubins], equals if not surpasses any number of other critically acclaimed versions. ”

Fanfare - July 2012

“...Right from the start you feel that all will be well. A clear preference for Steinberg”

Gramophone magazine - August 2012
