Schubert: Symphony No. 4; Britten: Serenade; Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 – Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sir John Barbirolli

Born in London of Italian and French parentage, Sir John Barbirolli (1899 – 1970) is remembered above all as the conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, which he helped save from dissolution in 1943 and conducted for the rest of his life. However, he was also a guest conductor of many other orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, and here performs with the orchestra of the WDR. These live recordings have never been released before. Barbirolli never recorded Britten’s Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, so this represents a valuable addition to his large discography. Barbirolli made one other recording of Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, with the New York Philharmonic in 1939, so this 1969 live performance in excellent stereo is essential for any collector of this great conductor’s work.

Alberto Cantù - Musica magazine - July/August 2013

"... this is a must for fans of Barbirolli ... Recommended."

Barry Brenesal - Fanfare - July/August 2013

“...Barbirolli treats the entire score with a veneration and majesty infused by the special element of an acolyte’s conviction...”
