Britten: St Nicolas (2013). The Choir of King’s College celebrated Benjamin Britten’s 100th birthday with the release of a new recording of Saint Nicolas. This recording closely follows the staging and instrumentation of the première of the work at the first Aldeburgh Festival in 1948.

Britten calls for a tenor soloist (Andrew Kennedy), chorus of men and boys (King’s College Choir), gallery chorus of girls (Sawston Village College Choir), orchestra (Britten Sinfonia) and congregation of mixed voices (Cambridge University Music Society).

The recording is the third release on the King’s College label, and the first to be released in surround sound, capturing the unique acoustics of King’s College Chapel.

"... a thoroughly welcome addition to the Kings/Britten discography ,,,"

Philip Reed - Choir & Organ magazine - January/February 2014

"This is an excellent new recording of Britten’s cantata St Nicholas... I think Stephen Cleobury’s is the finest performance to have appeared on disc since Britten’s own mono recording, an essential of any Britten collection ... The whole performance is utterly convincing and very moving, all captured in magnificent sound. The rest of the disc is good ... the real interest of this release is the outstanding recording of St Nicholas and that can be recommended without hesitation..."

Nigel Simeone - International Record Review - February 2014

"...I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the resonant King’s College acoustic captured better"
