Fauré: Requiem; J.S. Bach: Partita in D minor, Chorales, Ciaconna – Nigel Short, Gordan Nikolitch, Grace Davidson, William Gaunt, London Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble

During the 2011 City of London Festival, Tenebrae joined a chamber ensemble from the LSO at St Paul’s Cathedral for a performance of Fauré’s Requiem. The work was preceded by a selection of Bach’s chorales, interspersed with his Partita in D minor for solo violin, performed by Gordan Nikolitch, leader of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Fauré’s Requiem favours serenity, joy, and liberation over the dread and terror highlighted by most composers in settings of the Mass for the Dead. By adopting a more comforting approach, Fauré crafted music of astonishing beauty, in particular the ‘Pie Jesu’. Bach’s Partita No. 2, with chorales interspersed, culminates in a reconstruction of the ‘Ciaconna’, which draws attention to the hidden chorale themes within this fascinating work.

                   Recording of the Month

"...The singing of Tenebrae is marvellous here. Their blend is nothing short of sensational, and they fit the acoustic of St Giles’ Cripplegate as though it had been tailor made for them... I would now turn to Tenebrae above any other for this work, and it’s helped that the disc as a whole is rather marvellous, exceptionally well performed and very intelligently programmed. That, combined with LSO Live’s superb sound and budget price, makes it a definite winner."

Simon Thompson - MusicWeb-International.com - April 2013

"... an interesting combination, done with impeccable care."

Donald Metz - American Record Guide - March/April 2013

              Performance ***       Recording ****

"The playing of the London Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble and their leader Gordan Nikolitch and the singing of Tenebrae and the two soloists are all exemplary..."

Roger Nichols - BBC Music magazine - February 2013

           ’Gramophone Choice’

"...this is a devastatingly beautiful performance."
