Szymanowski: Symphonies Nos 3 and 4; Stabat Mater – Toby Spence, Denis Matsuev, Sally Matthews, Ekaterina Gubanova, Kostas Smoriginas, London Symphony Chorus,
London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev

For decades the music of Karol Szymanowski was rarely heard outside Poland. Today, he is recognised as one of Poland’s greatest musical figures. His desire to embody in his orchestral works the music of his native land, and his incorporation of the folkloric sounds of the Polish mountains, makes them essential listening for anyone with an interest in Polish culture and music.

This second, star-studded instalment of Gergiev’s Szymanowski cycle features the tenor Toby Spence in the Third Symphony Song of the Night and the internationally renowned pianist Denis Matsuev in the virtuosic Symphonie concertante, or Symphony No. 4. Szymanowski’s deeply personal setting of the Stabat Mater completes the cycle, the performance starring Sally Matthews and Ekaterina Gubanova, and introducing the young baritone Kostas Smoriginas.
