The Mariinsky label presents a recording of Don Quichotte, Massenet’s last great opera, a story of unrequited love, deception, and adventure, here featuring the formidable bass Ferruccio Furlanetto in the title role. The opera overflows with the sort of memorable tunes for which this composer was so famous, all wrapped up in exotic colours, and is presented as the red-blooded drama it is.
