Massenet: Don Quichotte – Ferruccio Furlanetto, Anna Kiknadze, Eleonora Vindau, Yulia Matochkina, Carlos D’Onofrio, Dmitry Koleushko, Didier Jouanny, Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev

The Mariinsky label presents a recording of Don Quichotte, Massenet’s last great opera, a story of unrequited love, deception, and adventure, here featuring the formidable bass Ferruccio Furlanetto in the title role. The opera overflows with the sort of memorable tunes for which this composer was so famous, all wrapped up in exotic colours, and is presented as the red-blooded drama it is.

"... Valery Gergiev’s recording casts Feruccio Furlanetto as Quichotte amid an otherwise all-Russian cast. He is quite astonishingly moving in it, as is Andrei Serov as Sancho Pança... " ****

Tim Ashley - The Guardian - 9 March 2012

Stephen Hastings - Musica magazine - April 2012

"...The opera world has long wanted/needed a good version of Cervantes’ celebrated Don Quixote story, [here] the opera is indeed reborn ..."

The Philadelphia Enquirer

"...the performance led by Valery Gergiev has, in Ferruccio Furlanetto, a Quichotte of undeniable vocal presence and impressive skill ... Gergiev paces the work with expert suppleness, orchestral atmosphere and as musch of his customary flair..."

Opera News (US)

"...Gergiev’s talent lies in his ability to enter a real pulse into this mellifluous music, an intimate necessity that keeps you inerested..."  ****

Classica (France)

‘He [Furlanetto] is quite astonishingly moving in it, as is Andrei Serov as Sancho Pança’

The Observer (UK)

‘...sensitive handling of Massenet’s delicately perfumed idiom, relishing the atmosphere of his Spanish pastiche’ -

The Sunday Times (UK)
