 Composer-portrait

"Said the shotgun to the head." for Poetry spokesman, rap chorus and orchestra, on a poem by Saul Williams; Drum Control for percussion and computer; "Is it?" for soprano and soprano saxophone

A co-production with Swiss Radio DRS 2

The key words "language" and "interpretation" are essential for all the pieces on this CD. In "Is it?" and "Said the shotgun to the head." "Interpreted" Thomas Kessler concrete texts with compositional means Klangelektronika Although neither "Is it?" still, "Said The shotgun to the head." are used, the experience of live-electronic reading modes, transformations of "reality" that Kessler made in the control pieces and makes beats, significantly down. In both cases, the music based on the mapping of language structures. In "Said the shotgun to the head." Kessler is the linguistic accusation almost absolute: All events of orchestral and choral music of this piece are derived directly from the speech of slam poet Saul Williams. It is really at Williams’ rhythmically extremely complex, multiform speech already an autonomous musical event. A native of New York and lives in Los Angeles, Saul Williams has arrived with his non-conformist, critical attitude towards the state, church and society in the United States to prominence.

Performed by:
Saul Williams, Poetry speaker; Basler rap singers; Basel Symphony Orchestra; Jean Pierre Drouet, drums and Fairlight computer; Sylvia Nopper, soprano; Marcus Weiss, soprano saxophone
