René Gerber tonal composing is oriented with its borrowings from polytonality to the French tradition. His music preferred clean lines and avoid anything overweight. Each instrument or any instrument group is assigned a specific role that can often have even within the orchestra solo character. The opera "Le Songe d’une nuit d’été" by Shakespeare was born in 1981. It is a fairy tale and fantasy at the same time. The author has drawn here without fear of the unlikely or anachronistic elements from very different sources.

It deals with the ambiguous behavior of the three lovers Titania, Lysander and Demetrius, who indulge in a back and forth of love competitions due to a spell. Here, Shakespeare creates delicious contrasts when he faces the group of craftsmen actor the leading figures of the piece. René Gerber has words and music, treated in parallel with this opera, in order to guarantee both the clarity of the language and the unity of the work. René Gerber was born in 1908 in Travers NE. After graduating at the Zurich Conservatory, he continued his studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique with Paul Dukas and Nadia Boulanger. His encounter with Maurice Ravel influenced him long term. To date, a wealth of compositions created: Chamber Music (Quartets, Sonatas for almost all instruments), concertos for violin, piano, clarinet, harp, bassoon, trumpet and orchestra and vocal music, including the present opera.
