1 Poèmes de la mort for tenor, baritone, bass, two guitars and electric bass guitar; 2 Guitare (Quatre pièces brèves); 3 Dre Minnelieder, version for soprano, flute and guitar; 4 Etudes for string orchestra, arranged for two guitars by H. Stampa; 5 quant n’ont assez fait dodo for tenor, guitar and piano 4-hands.

The impetus for the composition of a four-movement suite-like cycle for the guitar, who later took the title Quatre pièces brèves received, came from Andrés Segovia (1893-1987). The Spanish guitarist held in the early 1930s in Geneva, Martin’s hometown, in which the composer lived again after a two-year stay in Paris since 1924 and worked. While Segovia was already one of the most famous musicians of his time, Martin was the breakthrough has not yet succeeded as a composer.

Little is known about the relationship between Segovia and Martin. Whether the guitarist Martin issued a commission or this even took the initiative is equally in the dark as to the reason that Segovia to receive the finished work did not respond and it is not recorded in his repertoire. But we must assume that he did not want to just because in comparison with many other works that have been composed for Segovia and he played regularly, the four pieces Martins take out almost avant-garde.

The four guitar pieces remained Martins only solo works for the instrument. Julian Bream had tried to persuade Martin in old age to compose other works, but it has stayed with good intentions. Martin attacked but occasionally associated with some unusual chamber works, which are united on this recording, the instrument back.
