Why Matador? Patricia O’Callaghan explains the title: "The Matador was a 24 hour dance tavern in Toronto, opened in 1964 and only recently closed. This ’no alcohol’ establishment was freqented by those seeking a last dance after the bars had all closed. Cohen wrote the song [Closing Time] about it. Cohen himself is also like a matador. He’s someone who’s willing to go to the edge and stare death in the face. He is a ’killer’ of lies, illusions, and, lets face it, ladies." On Matador, patricia brings her special ability to find new meaning in great songs to the music of Leonard Cohen. With the backing of a great band and guest singers, Patricia explores the emotional depths and meaning of the songwriter and poet’s music. As a bonus, Matador features four Leonard Cohen songs from Patricia’s previous Marquis recordings including her celebrated version of "Hallelujah", and "The Smokey Life", a duet with Steven Page.
