Soler, Roger, and Sarda: Catalan String Quartets – Kreutzer Quartet
Here is a chance to explore Top of Form
string quartets from an unusual source, out of the middle-European mainstream. The three composers from the generation which followed Roberto Gerhard create their own distinctive yet recognisably post-Schoenbergian style. Any lovers of the string quartet genre will enjoy this beautifully played and recorded download.
While the string quartet is most usually associated with the Germanic traditions, many fine quartets have emanated from a variety of sources in more recent times, and the Catalan area is such. The four quartets recorded here are important becuase they offer a picture of quartet writing outside the main European canon; the four composers are of the generation after the great Roberto Gerhard, who left Spain for Britain in 1939 but whose roots in Catalan music created the cornerstone for this new school of expression.
“All this music is wonderfully played and recorded in a Loughton church with ideal acoustics for the purpose; the Kreutzers leave you in no doubt of their commitment and conviction. Taken one at a time, I enjoyed them all”
Peter Grahame Woolf
