Hopelessly impossible to categorise, the music on this album is a blend of gentle modern-lyrical chamber music and wild cabaret-style vocal items. American composer Kevin Malone is another now working in the UK and his links to Manchester brought him into contact with the Anthony Burgess Center. The writer of ’A Clockwork Orange’ and many other great books  had written several songs for the film which were left out of the final version. Malone has set these in cabaret style and they are sung with tremendous aplomb by Emily Howard,  an American mezzo equally at home on the stage and on Broadway. These ’pop lyrics’ by Bugess were only discovered recently and this is their first appearance. They are accompanied by another cabaret song, a beatifully atmopsheric chamber piece Angels and Fireflies in version for recorder and orchestra (**see MS 2106)  and a piano quartet work ’American Terpsichore’.  This album should appeal to followers of both contemporary classical and Broadway/cabaret style music and to anyone intersted in the work of Anthony Burgess.
